Strathconon Estates – a wholehearted nature restoration project in its early days
Welcome to Strathconon Estates
Strathconon Estates is located in the heart of the Scottish Highlands in central Ross-Shire and covers approximately 33,500 hectares of ground – from open hills to narrow mountainous landscape.
About the area
Strathconon Estates comprises the three adjacent estates of Strathconon, Scardroy and Ledgowan.
Strathconon Estates covers large swathes of the longest glen in Scotland, stretching for more than 20 miles, with 400 permanent or temporary residents.
Strathconon Estates is known for its fine deer and excellent stalking, but has over the past years introduced several initiatives to create patches of higher biodiversity at an otherwise classic Scottish sporting estate.
Following a change of ownership early 2023, these initiatives are being matured and scaled further to gradually transforming Strathconon Estates into a wholehearted nature restoration project.
A nature restoration project
Strathconon Estates is already home to important native species, such as Golden Eagle, Ptarmigan, Otter, Salmon, Red Squirrel and Scots Pine, and the plans ahead will hopefully result in even more species thriving here and an increase in their numbers.
We are committed to restoring natural woodland cover, strengthening existing native woodland connections, establishing riparian woodlands and to converting former production forests into untouched forests and introducing more native species of trees.
We will continue the ongoing peatland restoration projects, and we will re-establish natural hydrology where possible.
To protect vulnerable species on the hill, we are minimising disturbance during breeding season, and we are in the process of reducing deer numbers to a more biologically sustainable level.
And more things to come to change Strathconon Estates into an oasis for the natural world.
Exciting times are ahead, and we are grateful for the help and support of everyone involved.
Strathconon Estates is part of Earthkeeper
Earthkeeper is a set of practical and professional frameworks for a deep love for nature and a sense of oneness with every living being in it.
Earthkeeper works to conserve and restore authentic ecosystems. In terms of science, this means contributing to ensuring the survival and well-being of species in their natural environment. In terms of energies, it means maintaining a primordial and loving resonance in the world.
At the heart of Earthkeeper is a desire to make a difference for nature and its creatures, great and small.
